If you choose to see a private doctor, any prescriptions they issue are private. It is not expected that your NHS GP will automatically convert a private prescription into an NHS prescription.
Your NHS GP is responsible for your care within the NHS and will only prescribe medication that is clinically appropriate, in line with NHS policies, and part of local NHS prescribing guidelines.
Key Points You Need to Know
- Private prescriptions remain private – If you receive a private prescription, you should expect to continue obtaining and paying for the medication privately.
- NHS prescriptions are not automatic – Your GP is not obligated to issue an NHS prescription just because a private doctor has recommended it.
- Clinical and NHS guidelines apply – Your NHS GP will only prescribe medicines that are approved for use within NHS care and considered necessary under NHS treatment guidelines.
- Specialist medications may not be issued by a GP – Some medicines recommended by private specialists require hospital or specialist oversight and cannot be prescribed by your GP.
When Might an NHS Prescription Be Considered?
Your NHS GP may consider issuing an NHS prescription only if:
- The medication is routinely prescribed on the NHS for your condition.
- It is included in the local NHS prescribing guidelines.
- Your GP is clinically comfortable and responsible for prescribing and monitoring the medication.
If these conditions are not met, you will need to continue obtaining the medication through your private provider.
What Should You Do?
- If you choose private care, be prepared to continue with private prescriptions.
- If you want NHS treatment, speak to your GP before seeking private treatment to understand what is available on the NHS.
- Share any relevant reports from your private consultation with your GP for review, but understand that they may not prescribe the recommended medication on the NHS.
